Gutter Guards

There are five general categories of gutter guards and one is sure to be right for your home, but which one?  Review our descriptions to find the right solution for you.

Mesh Screens are available in a wide variety of materials and finishes at home stores and are generally installed by homeowners.

They often have a high spot or bulge in the screen trapping debris against the fascia and roof line.  A second common issue is when one side of the screen is installed under the leading edge of shingles. Tampering with an original shingle roof installation may void a roof warranty and may lead to water intrusion under the shingles.

My experience of this type of screen is that it’s best suited to keeping tennis balls out of your gutter

Gutter Inserts are available at home stores and are generally installed by homeowners.

When installed they fill the area normally occupied by water reducing the gutters carrying capacity.

Over time they will trap any debris that enters the gutter and as such are designed as a temporary solution which require maintenance –  removal, cleaning and or replacement normally after about 6 months of use. This is exactly what most homeowners are seeking to avoid.

Flat Decks fall right in the middle of most gutter protection offerings in my opinion when it comes to value and utility. They are commercial products usually  installed by trades people.

My experience is that flat deck gutter guards can reduce the maintenance needs for most homeowners.  The typical maintenance routine is check and clean as necessary, usually every 6 months or so.  Cleaning is done by blowing off any accumulated organic debris.

The flat deck design makes this a breeze (excuse the pun) as they typically have a smooth finish which is easy to clean and does a better job than screen mesh at resisting organic matter buildup.

Shield or Helmet style gutter guards cover the gutter with a solid surface and rely upon surface tension to have the water roll around a curve or series of curves to enter the gutter while displacing any debris in the process.

There are products that incorporate the gutter and shield/helmet in one component piece. Many other options are designed as an after market product that will fit over existing gutters

This style guard is often attached directly to the roof under the leading edge of shingles.

Micro Screens are the latest technology and some are among the highest end products generally available on the market.  They are typically a chassis made of vinyl or aluminum with a fine mesh screen stretched across this chassis.

These types of guards are often installed at a pitch to encourage organic debris to self evacuate. In my experience, results with these systems vary, in some cases being essentially maintenance free. In other cases, especially in  a shaded environment these mesh systems can clog, thus prohibiting the rainwater from entering the gutter as designed but instead flowing over the side(s) of the gutter.

Although the gutters themselves remain clog free, in this scenario they will begin to fail and continue to deteriorate until repaired or replaced.

Within these five broad categories of  gutter guard systems, there are dozens if not hundreds of branded products available, I would encourage any homeowner to consider their homes’ own unique environment, for example: Does your home have harsh snowy winters or are you in Florida with no ice but plenty of  heavy rain?  Is your home shaded by trees or exposed to the elements? Is your home on the coast or Inland?  These can all have a bearing on what’s the right solution for your home. Please contact us with any questions
